A 19-year-old gold miner plunged to his death at around 14:00 hrs on Saturday while attempting to bathe in an abandoned mining pit in Mahdia.
Police said that Rawle Baird, of Albouystown and two friends were in St. Elizabeth Backdam, located at Mahdia, when they decided to bathe in a flooded and abandoned gold mining pit.
Baird reportedly plunged in first and his friends became alarmed when he failed to surface.
After entering the pit and failing to locate him, the friends returned to their camp and informed the camp manager and their co-workers.
The friends, along with the other men, resumed their search and after several hours, eventually located Baird’s body.
The dead teen’s remains have since been transported to Georgetown.
