Sunburst Camptown and Santos moved on to the quarter-finals following respective wins on the opening night of action in the 2nd annual Banks Premium Beer Cup tournament at the Tucville ground, Friday.
In the feature match-up Santos had to pull out all the stops to overrun the robust challenge of Flamingo in extra time after regulation time failed to break the deadlock in a tight and intense battle.
Veteran and leading Santos defender Seon McKenzie needed to dig into his repertoire of skill to push his team into the lead 7 minutes into extra time, a goal which was scored against the run of play.
In pursuit of the equalizer, Flamingo left their back door open and Santos capitalized on the opportunity by nailing their second goal through Hillary Williams in the 107th minute.
The evening’s opening salvo saw a spirited fight by Northern Rangers in their game against the more established Sunburst Camptown unit. The Campbellville based Camptown enjoyed 70 percent of possession as Kwame La Fleur eased the tension when he finally breached the defence of the Rangers in the 60th minute.
The Rangers too, found their range and fired back almost immediately when Julius Padmore rocked the back of the nets to the delight of his teammates.
But that joy was short lived when Camptown’s leading striker Telson McKinnon eased his way past the defence to drill his shot past the goalkeeper in the 69th minute. McKinnon could have ended the game with a healthier tally were it not for numerous missed chances. Defender Kester Alleyne sealed the deal for Camptown with five minutes remaining to full time.
Camptown and Santos will face each other for a semi-final place next Sunday.
Meanwhile, two more teams will walk the plank this evening when group of 16 action continues at the Tucville ground.
BK International Western Tigers will lock horns with Thomas United, opponents that should not pose too much problems for them. The Tigers, back in the fray at the Premier League level, will be led by their captain Delon Fraser with potent support coming from start striker Devon Millington, Sherman David, Colin Nelson, Kevin Gordon, Neil Fraser and Ron Fraser.
This evening’s opening match features home team Fruta Conquerors against Uprising in what is anticipated as a keen dual.
The overall morale of Uprising has been bolstered by the return of fonder/coach Gordon Braithwaite. Their on field quest for top honors will be led by captain Daniel Favourite who will look to the likes of Devon Dooker, Kurt Sunich, John Fecker, veterans Omali Nassy, Jomo Benfield and Freeman Fordyce. Standing between the uprights will be former GDF goalie, Keith Fraser.
Conquerors will hope that with their combination of junior and senior players, they can book a quarter-final berth.
They will bank on the exciting junior brigade of Lumumba Hinds, Manasseh Primo, Trevon Lythcott, goal keeper Oswald Cornette and Eon Alleyne along with the tested tried and proven seniors in, Lester ‘Puppy’ Peters, Jomo Hinds and Captain Joylon Harry.
Fans are in for another evening of exciting ball play.
