A COMMENT
It is a norm that when you invite someone, you as the host, would provide for that person’s entertainment.
One cannot invite a person to one’s home and then expect that person to buy his refreshments and meals.
The first One Day International played between England and the West Indies at the Providence Stadium saw tight security but lax protocol. This was especially pronounced in the Presidential Suite in which were to be found many dignitaries, including foreign ambassadors, parliamentarians and Ministers of the government.
Guests of the President were required to purchase their own drinks and were served food, which they also had to buy, in Styrofoam boxes. This is certainly not the standard of service befitting guests of the Head of State.
A Government minister was forced to rummage through her purse in order to find money to buy a beverage to quench her thirst since not even bottled water was being offered to the invitees of the Presidential Suite.
This is a far cry from what prevailed two years ago when Guyana hosted Cricket World Cup. Then, the service was much better, and greater attention was paid to the hospitality.
While no one should expect a sumptuous banquet, it is unacceptable for guests of the Head of State, especially diplomats, to have to purchase their own drinks. Such shabby treatment and neglect of protocol does no good for the image of our country.
We hope that better will be done tomorrow when the second One Day International is played.
