Harper to lead Int X1, Bishop named in MSC side
As the cricket fever intensifies in Guyana with this weekend’s ODIs at Providence, several former national and International players will don their whites tomorrow at the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) ground from 13:00hrs in what is anticipated to be a pulsating 30-over contest.
Former first-class batsman Mark Harper will captain an International X1 while former West Indies pacer Ian Bishop, who represented MSC in the 1980s, has been named in the MSC side.
Bishop, now a TV commentator, could share the new ball with another former Malteenoes Test pacer in Colin Stuart while former Guyana pacer Colwin Cort and Shaun Silus are also in the MSC bowling line-up.
Former Guyana youth off-spinner Sean Devers, who is also now a cricket commentator will provide the spin while the MSC batting is strong with the likes of the elegant Victor Dias, ex-first class batsman Neil Barry, Gregory Williams, Winston Semple, Linden Gilbert, Shawn Holder, Roy Ceaser, Orin Hutson and former West Indies ‘B’ team keeper Kenneth Wong in the line-up.
The International X1 will depend on the batting of former Guyana middle-order batsmen Skipper Mark Harper, David Harper, Nolan McKenzie, Alfred Mentore, Mike Chan and Jeff Humphrey while ex-first-class off-spinner Gavin Nedd, Maurice Julian, Roderick Lovell and Edward Burnette should do the bulk of the bowling.
Test umpire Eddy Nicholas and Nigel Dugid should be the umpires and plenty of fun for the players and nostalgia for the spectators is anticipated.
A well stocked bar and music should add to the day of fun and frolic.
