The National Referees Committee (NRC) of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) in conjunction with the Guyana Football Referees Council (GFRC) successfully conducted a Seminar on the Role of the 4th Official and Report Writing on Sunday last at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Thomas Lands.
Lawrence Griffith – FIFA and English FA trained Referees Instructor and Assessor carried the participants through their paces with a thorough and precise discussions on the topics which dealt with the three phases of duties which the fourth official operates under. That is before, during and after the game.
The seminar was attended by almost all the officials who officiate in Georgetown and East Coast Demerara.
They were refreshed and given a few tips on the finer arts of the fourth official duties and functions.
Special emphasis was placed on Controlling the Technical Area, Assisting the Referee in performing the administrative aspect of the game and looking out for off the ball incidents or violent conduct which occurs out of the view of the on the field officiating trio.
Other important topics which were dealt with was dealing with injuries, the procedure when dealing with substitutions, indicating to the Referee when a player was wrongfully cautioned due to mistaken identity or when a player is not sent off having been given a second caution and checking that the players are uniformly attired in keeping with Law 4 (Players equipment).
The 4th Official is also always on standby to fill in for any of the Officiating Personals if they are unable to officiate for any reason.
The second half of the Seminar focused on report writing. It was revealed that the match report is the most important source of information in regard to the game.
When a Referee has to submit an incident report he/she must be accurate, brief and clear and state facts and not opinion.
The participants were told that it takes time and practice to write discipline reports properly and were told to aim to be accurate, concise and to the point.
