A 23-year-old United States citizen has been remanded to prison after being charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The accused, Ashanti D’Aguiar, made her appearance at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.
It is alleged that last Friday, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, the woman had in her possession 10 kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
D’Aguiar was represented by defense counsel Roger Yearwood, who made a humble application for the matter to be transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court at an early date.
The Magistrate then enquired from the lawyer if that was his only application, but he noted that he was fully aware of the magistrate’s position on drug matters.
D’Aguiar was remanded to prison and is expected to make her next court appearance at the Providence Magistrate’s Court on March 19.
The accused was intercepted with cocaine concealed in packets of baking powder. The woman was about to board a flight heading to the United States.
