Hosts Guyana open campaign against Barbados on April 6
By Sean Devers
Former Berbice Inter-County left-handed batsman Adrian Amsterdam has been appointed Coach of the National under-15 team for the 2009 West Indies 50-overs under-15 cricket tournament in Guyana from April 6-12.
Amsterdam, the son of former first-class batsman and ex-National selector Leslie Amsterdam, takes over from Alvin Johnson who coached the team in last year’s tournament in Dominica.
Former Essequibo Inter-County left-hander Elroy Stephney is the new manager of the team which will begin their 2009 campaign against Barbados on April 6.
While an official release has not yet been made by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), a reliable source confirmed the appointment of Amsterdam, who was named Berbice Inter-County Coach of the year at the Berbice Cricket Board’s second annual awards ceremony at State House in New Amsterdam on Saturday night.
According to a West Indies Cricket Board official, Guyana face-off with defending champions the Windward Islands in their second match on April 7 before battling Trinidad and Tobago two days later.
The South Americans, hunting their first title at this level since the competition began in 1996, then oppose Jamaica on April 11 and the Leeward Islands on April 12.
The Leewards face Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago play the Windwards in the other first round matches.
