Three Surinamese nationals were yesterday ordered to be deported to their homeland when they made a court appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
Emanuel Ekezine, 31, Raphael Citjkei, 25, and Edwin Onsa, 36, all pleaded guilty to entering Guyana illegally on March 9 at Berbice and did not attempt to go to an immigration office. According to the defendants, they came to Guyana at the invitation of a friend. They said that the woman, whom they know as “Cheryl”, lives across the Demerara Harbour Bridge. The men further told the Magistrate that before they came to Guyana they had called their “friend” and she spoke with them.
However, when they reached Guyana the woman refused to answer her telephone, which prompted them to prepare to return to their homeland.
It was at this time that the police arrested them and charged the defendants with the present offence. Each of the defendants was fined $20,000 with an alternative of 12 months’ imprisonment and immediate deportation after.
