A Guyanese woman, Shakila Chaitram, who had been living in Nevis for some 16 years, was on Wednesday discovered hanging from the rafters of the front patio of her home in Stoney Grove by one of her neighbours.
The shocking discovery was made by Chaitram’s neighbour when he passed her home and saw her in a standing position. Some time later, he passed the house again and saw her in the same stance.
He went to investigate and found her hanging body. He immediately raised an alarm.
According to the dead woman’s husband of 22 years, Shawn Chaitram, they were supposed to return to Guyana this year. No reasons have yet been purported for the woman’s apparent suicide.
The dead woman’s friends and neighbors described her as a nice person who always had a smile for everyone. One of her neighbors said she never passed anyone without a greeting.
Friends and neighbours, who gathered to commiserate with Shawn, described Shakila as a nice person who always had a smile for everyone. One man said she never passed anyone without a greeting.
Shakila’s mother was inconsolable as she struggled to come to grips with the sudden death of her daughter.
Apart from her mother and husband, the dead woman has left to mourn her nine-year-old son, Kumkarran Chaitram.
