President of the Guyana Hockey Board Phillip Fernandes in an invited comment with Kaieteur Sport said that the initiative taken by affiliate member Old Fort to assist in the revival of the sport in Linden last Tuesday was indeed a good one.
Fernandes, who was elected President of the Board earlier this year, applauded the effort of the club, adding that it just shows that with a little more commitment from the individual clubs much more could be done to raise the awareness of the game throughout the country.
“I would like to see an activity like this every year to commence our season and I am therefore encouraging every club to organise a similar event in the outlying areas,” Fernandes disclosed.
Fernandes said the staging of the event has shown what clubs can do and because in the past such programmes were not encouraged, the sport’s awareness was not emphasised.
“With our stated policy of intensifying the production of more coaches to assist in spreading the game, such ventures will always find support from the Board,” Fernandes pointed out.
Meanwhile, Digicel (Guyana) Retail Sales Manager Dwayne Scott made a presentation of jerseys to the junior unit of the Mackenzie Sports Club Hockey team during the proceedings last Tuesday.
Business Development Manager Gavin Hope speaking on behalf of the Company said that because the entity is always looking for opportunities to assist in the development of young people, the occasion was another perfect setting for them to demonstrate their social responsibility.
He added that they will continue to support such ventures in the future.
