Father, son brutally murdered in space of six months
A Guyanese family is to seek assistance from the Venezuelan Embassy to probe the unsolved murders of a father and son, who were brutally slain in the Spanish-speaking territory within a six-month span.
Relatives said that Ramsahoye Seemangal, 60, an ice cream vendor who has been residing in Venezuela for the past 27 years, was hacked to death last Thursday in an area known as Ocne de Abril, in San Felix, Venezuela.
His son, 26-year-old Davendra Seemangal, was found dead last October, with a gunshot wound to the head, in the family’s San Felix home.
Relatives said that robbery appeared to be the motive in both cases.
Mr. Seemangal, who was the father of seven, and is originally from Grove, East Bank Demerara, migrated to Venezuela in 1982.
Seemangal’s daughter-in-law, Lilowtie Thakurdeen, said that the family had hoped to find a better life in the neighbouring territory.
The woman said that she understands that her father-in-law was in a street some 300 yards from the family’s home on Thursday, when his assailants chopped him in the head before slitting his throat.
She was informed of the tragedy the following day. However, she was not told how many persons carried out the attack and whether anything was stolen from the victim.
She said that no one has been arrested.
The victim is likely to be buried in Venezuela today.
The woman also related that five months ago, Seemangal’s eldest son, Davendra, was found shot to death in the family’s house. She said that the house was ransacked, indicating that robbery was the motive. His case also remains unsolved.
As if that were not enough, Mr. Seemangal’s eldest daughter succumbed to cancer last December.
Relatives said that they have received reports that bandits in San Felix have been targeting Guyanese who reside there.
They alleged that the Venezuelan authorities appear to be reluctant to investigate these attacks.
“We are pleading with the Venezuelan Embassy to assist us,” Thakurdeen said, while expressing fear for the safety of the other relatives residing in Venezuela.
