Police at Parika, East Bank Essequibo have been called in to investigate how a child came into possession of a live round of ammunition while in school.
The child, from Ruby Backdam, is only in Grade Two at the Parika Backdam Primary School.
Kaieteur News understands that a teacher found another student playing with the bullet and when asked the child said that she had taken it from the male student.
The boy said that his father has a gun and he got the live round from him.
Concerned teachers and members of the community who had come to know of the incident reported the matter to a Rural Constable. However, he did not handle the matter.
The head-teacher, who was not in school when the child was found with the live round, called the Regional Education Officer when he returned. The Regional Education Officer suggested that the matter be reported to the Police.
Residents of Parika Back say if the child had access to the live round then there is every likelihood that he could have had access to his father’s firearm as well, and they deliberate on whether the situation could have been more serious.
All students of the Parika Back Primary School are currently housed in the nursery school building while a new primary school building is being constructed.
Was Jagdeo honest when he made those promises?
