This newspaper understands that Cort has confessed to being a member of the gang headed by the now dead Rondell ‘Fine Man’ Rawlins, that carried out the Lusignan and Bartica killings that left a total of 23 persons dead.
He has also confessed to the killing of two persons during a robbery at the home of a Triumph, East Coast Demerara goldsmith.
Senior police officials have confirmed that the suspect is in custody but are refusing to divulge any further information.
Police Commissioner Henry Greene had named the suspect as one of the remaining gang members that the law enforcement officials were seeking to finally dismantle the group which was responsible for some of the most heinous crimes this country has experienced.
Greene had stated last August, following the slaying of Rawlins and Jermaine Charles, called ‘Skinny’, that there are about 25 persons who were either a part of the gang and who were in some way assisting them presently in custody.
“The search is not over. We want to notify those additional gang members who are still out there that we have not given up the search. We are looking for several men,” Greene had stated.
At that time he had listed the remaining gang members as Deon Cort called ‘Capone’, ‘Sonny’, Richard Daniels called ‘Chucky’, ‘Not Nice’, White Boy called ‘Whitey’, ‘Ratty’, Aubrey, and Cliff Chicester and James Gibson who have since been killed.
Police are almost certain that most of the remaining gang members had fled to the neighbouring Dutch-Speaking Republic and are working closely with their Surinamese counterparts with the aim of apprehending them.
