Led by an attractive half century from middle-order batsman Kevin Ramdeen (67) and a fine spell of bowling from left arm unorthodox spinner Gudakesh Moti Kanhai, who grabbed 3-30 from 10 overs, Berbice defeated Demerara by 37 runs to place themselves in the driver’s seat to capture this year’s Castrol Inter-County Under-15 Cricket Competition.
Played at the Guyana National Stadium yesterday, Berbice who started the day on four points, one behind Demerara after a win and a loss to Essequibo ended it on a total of eight points from three matches, while Demerara remained on five points from two games following a win and a no result due to an abandoned match.
Winning the toss and electing to take first strike, Berbice reached a respectable 225-6 off the allotted overs and then restricted Demerara to 188-7.
Apart from Ramdeen’s knock which included 7 fours, Rajindra Dasrath stroked 35 with 4 boundaries, while Shalendra Shameer (28 not out) and Verapen Permaul (20), also made useful contributions. Ramdeen’s 50 came up of 48 balls decorated with 6 fours.
Bowling for Demerara, leg-spinner Poorendra Jaigobin picked up 3-59 off 9 overs and Chanderpaul Hemraj took 2-25 off 10 overs.
In their turn at the crease, Demerara were off to an impressive start with openers Christopher Surat (22) and Brian Sattaur (35) racing to 47, before the latter who was beginning to look ominous, striking seven exquisitely timed boundaries, exhibited a lack of patience and in attempting to beat Moti out of the attack and mistimed a sweep slog and top-edged a catch to square leg.
It was sweet revenge for the bowler, who was beautifully straight driven the ball before to the long-on fence. His dismissal saw the arrival of Chandrika Persaud and together with Surat added a further 27 runs, before the second wicket fell with the total on 74. Persaud offered a return catch to Berbice’s Captain Shawn Perreira for 15.
With the score on 85, Surat’s stay at the wicket came to an end when he was caught at long on off Perreira’s bowling. Sunil Rupee and Hemraj then featured in a stand of 74 for the fourth wicket when the former was caught at the wicket off Kanhai’s bowling for 27 at which stage Demerara were 159-4.
Captain Shaquille Williams came next, but with the addition of one run, Hemraj was run out by Kanhai for 40. By this time the overs were quickly running out and Demerara’s asking rate steadily climbing. Kareem Naughton, who had joined Williams, scored 6, before he was bowled neck and crop by Kanhai as Demerara reached 169-6.
Williams in his quest for quick runs was efficiently snapped up by Linden Austin off his own bowling and his dismissal saw the hosts hopes swiftly evaporate. Mark Rigby and Denesh Mangal picked up singles and a few doubles, but those were not enough to bring then close to the Berbice total and they finished on 9 and 5 respectively as Demerara failed to reach the required target when the overs expired. Ramdeen was later named Man-of-the-Match.
The final game will be played today, at the same venue, starting from 09:30 hrs.
