Dear Editor,
With reference to an article appearing in Kaieteur News (March 2, 2009) and bearing the caption: “Pensioner Waiting To Receive Benefits from NIS”, please see the following response from the National Insurance Scheme:
Mr. Roopnarine Ramrattan is in receipt of Disablement Pension from the National Insurance Scheme with effect from January, 1994, and has also received reimbursement for expenses relating to his condition.
The organisation has also presented him with a brand-new wheel chair to assist him to move around.
Disablement Pension is calculated based on the assessed percentage of disability and the person’s wages.
The number of contributions is not relevant, since there is no contribution requirement for this particular benefit.
On the issue of the outstanding Old Age Benefit, please be advised that Mr. Ramrattan will receive this payment very shortly as processing has not yet been concluded. This Benefit is based on contributions which have to be verified before the decision is made on the benefit to be paid.
The claimant or his wife can make contact with the Publicity and Public Relations Unit on Tel. # 227-3461, should they require any further information.
