Rudolph Mitchell will make a grand return to the race walking scene this morning, when the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club stages a memorial race walk in commemoration of the death of former President Cheddi Jagan.
Walkers will face the starters whistle at the Bank of Guyana at 06:30hrs and proceed along Main Street up to the Cheddie Jagan Research Centre (Red House), High Street, Georgetown
Mitchell has had a successful start to the season, carting off top honours in the inaugural event, 20 laps around the inner circuit of the National Park. He had since sustained an injury to his foot that has sidelined him for the past two events. O’Neil Joseph and Jonathon Fagundes had capitalized on Mitchell’s absence, chalking up a win each in the two events staged so far this year.
Mitchell will also have his sights set on the grand 100 mark since he is aiming to win that amount of races to be the first local walker to complete that feat. At present he is 16 races away from his goal.
He will be required to be at his best if he is to out-walk O’Neil Durant and Jonathon Fagundes, two walkers that have been in ripping form during his absence.
All eyes will also be on female walker Dona Ramkissoon, who has been setting the pace. Veterans, Debidyal Harold and Maurice Fagundes would also attempt to etch their names into the record books, being the oldest race walkers competing among a bunch of youngsters.
Trophies and other prizes would be at stake for walkers finishing within the first three positions in the various categories.
