Consistent Dowlin (51) again among the runs
By Sean Devers
The last time Guyana and the Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) clashed at the First-Class level in Guyana, Shivnarine Chanderpaul made an unbeaten double century last year.
By the end of the second day of the ninth round WICB regional four-day cricket encounter between the two sides at Bourda yesterday, Narsingh Deonarine was well entrenched to follow Chanderpaul’s example after Guyana had claimed first innings points in the final session.
Resuming on 24-2, replying to CCC’s 254, Guyana reached 275-5, enjoying a lead of 21 runs with the 25-year-old Deonarine unbeaten on a magnificent 121 from 258 balls, 377 minutes with 11 fours and a six.
Deonarine batted with authority and flair to register his sixth First-Class ton, fifth at regional level and second for the season and added 142 for the fifth wicket with his Skipper Travis Dowlin (51) after they had joined forces two balls before lunch with Guyana on 101-4.
Dowlin notched up his sixth half-century of season with responsible batting after benefiting from an umpiring blunder by Dasroy Balgobin when on five. His innings was decorated with six fours and lasted 151 balls and 210 minutes.
Dowlin joined Deonarine when Sewnarine Chattergoon (40) was caught behind off wily off-spinner Ryan Austin and ensured Guyana dominated the second session as the hosts reached 178-4 by tea.
After the break, Dowlin missed a flighted delivery from Austin and was bowled at 243-5, but by then the Guyanese were well on course for first innings points. They will now hope to avoid losing the game outright as they did on the two previous occasions they took first innings points this season.
The 32-year-old Dowlin, who was out hit wicket on his First-Class debut in Grenada in 1997, trod on his wicket as he played a delivery from Austin but Balgobin, who supposedly did not see what transpired, gave the benefit of the doubt to the batsman, much to the dismay of the CCC team and amusement of the small but vociferous crowd.
The Guyana Captain responded with another solid innings to take his runs tally this season to 491 although he should have been taken at cover on 47 off West Indies ‘A’ team pacer Kevin McLean at 222-4.
Earlier, Leon Johnson (3) opted to play no-shot to pacer Boris Hutchinson and gloved a catch to the keeper at 36-3.
Chattergoon hit four fours and was now beginning to bat himself back into form when he was dismissed after adding 65 with Deonarine for the fourth wicket.
The Trinidad-born Austin who played the bulk of his First-Class cricket for Barbados, employed refreshing flight and spin at a time when most regional spinners are content to bowl flat and quick and took his wicket tally this season to 34. But the other bowlers looked innocuous on a placid track and fast outfield although McLean bowled with pace at times.
Deonarine, the leading run scorer this season with 692 runs, pulled Hutchinson for a four before caressing his gloriously for consecutive boundaries down the ground just after tea but slowed down drastically as he approached his century.
The Albion batsmen, with four Tests to his name, was dropped at slip on 99 off McLean and reached his ton from 210 balls, 311 minutes with 11 fours and a six.
At a venue where he made his Test debut four years ago, the talented Deonarine will have his sights set on a double century today to further strengthen his claim for a West Indies Test re-call for the upcoming tour to England.
Assad Fudadin, who has faced 58 balls for his six, was the other not out batsman when play ended at 17:42hrs. Austin has so far picked up 2-86 from 34 overs.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
