Dear Editor,
After reading the Sunday March 1edition of Kaieteur News, “Soesdyke/Linden Highway deteriorates dramatically”, where the minibus operators who ply the Georgetown/Linden route made it known that the sad state of the road causes significant damages to their buses, one is forced to ask what the operators of the Kwakwani/Linden route are saying.
The distance from the Soesdyke junction to Yarrowcabra is nothing in comparison to Linden to Kwakwani.
The distance from Kwakwani to Linden is approximately the same as from Georgetown to Linden, but will take about three times the time travelling from Georgetown to Linden.
The Kwakwani/Linden road is in a state worse than when we used to call it ‘trail’. The time has gone when drivers get lost going to Kwakwani.
The sad part is the millions of dollars spent each year on the road. To do what? Probably give some contractor a pay day?
I will always remember and quote our Prime Minister who said in 2003 that to fix one mile of this road will cost $5 million. So what kind of work will be done if funds are released in batches of $20 million every other year, and no systematic approach to these repairs is taken?
If it will take $5 million to fix one mile, then let four miles be fixed properly with the $20 million or concentrate on the very bad areas and have them fixed.
It is embarrassing, disgraceful and disgusting to see the condition of the road the workers of the Berbice River Bauxite Company have to traverse to earn their daily bread.
For the amount of monies the National Treasury collects from each worker in this bauxite company as PAYE, a decent road for them to travel on in return is not too much to ask for.
