The 2008 Barakat Brothers 20/20 cricket competition in West Demerara continued over the weekend with three matches.
At Meten-Meer-Zorg West, hosts Meten-Meer-Zorg Sports Club ‘A’, booked a place into the semi-final by beating Zeelugt in the morning before getting past the Meten-Meer-Zorg B Team in the afternoon from 14:00hrs.
In other matches, Meten-Meer-Zorg SC A beat Zeelugt by 50 runs. Meten-Meer-Zorg Sports Club ‘A’ made 140 all out in 19 overs with Mahandra Nandkishor (39), Shawn Mc Kay (24) and Avinash Sharanandan (18) leading the way.
Off-spinner Kapil Chanderban (3 – 23), Tavindra Mangra (2 – 27) and Eon Singh (2-6) were the main wicket takers for Zeelugt who fell for 90 all out in 17.2 overs with Neil Bissessar (36), Singh (16) and Omar Shakur (16) leading the way.
Skipper Mc Kay grabbed 5-18 with his medium pace while Essequibo pacer Trevor Benn took 2-20.
At 14:00hrs Meten-Meer-Zorg Sport Club ‘A’ – beat Meten-Meer-Zorg Sports Club ‘B’ by 102 runs after making 169-7 in 20 overs with Zamal Khan smashing 11 fours in 68 and Saharandand supporting with 18.
Leyland Sobers took 2-23 for Meten-Meer-Zorg ‘B’ who crashed to 67 all out in 18.2 overs.
Arshad Alli and Surendra Ragunath made 17 each.
Former Guyana under-19 left-arm pacer Rafeek Mohamed captured 3 -17 while Mahandra Nandkishore had 2-7.
At Zeeberg, Crane beat Leguan by 73 runs on Sunday from 10:00hrs to move closer to the second semi-final spot in Zone (A) with one match to play. Crane made 196-8 in 2- overs with Clement Archer (45), Anand Bharrat (20), Amin Azees (20) and David Allert (19) leading the fight as Shazaad Razack had 2-37 and Zahir Razack 2-30.
Leguan fell for 123 in 16 overs despite 34 from Zahir Razak and 33 from Hemraj Persaud.
Medium pacer Raul Hoyte registered the first hat-trick of the competition in his 3-18 from 1.4 overs while Clement Archer (2-21) and Amin Azeez (2-8) offered support.
The competition continues this weekend with six matches while the semi-finals and Final are set for Youman-Nabi day (Tuesday March 10) Phagwah day (Wednesday March 11).
