As the dismantling campaign continues, some vendors at Parika, East Bank Essequibo have said that they are the targets of unfair treatment at the hands of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC).
On Friday last, three stalls were dismantled just off the main road in Parika, as the NDC seized some $23 million worth of goods from the vendors.
The NDC claims that the vendors are on government’s reserve and they need to remove, especially since Parika would soon become a township. While the vendors understand the process of dismantling the stalls, they cannot seem to figure out why their goods were seized.
They explained that the Chairman of the NDC, Krishna Samlall, had initially asked them to move their stalls from the road a little so as not to hamper the free flow of traffic. However, according to the vendors, Samlall suddenly informed them on Friday that they needed to break down the stalls in keeping with the laws.
The sellers noted that they have been doing business at that specific area for the past 21 years and think that the NDC is being unfair to them.
“This is affecting us a lot because we can’t do any wholesale business. We don’t even know where we goods them deh,” Veronica Bissessar (a vendor) told this newspaper.
According to the woman, due to the action of the NDC, she has lost an entire weekend of business, on which her family solely depends.
Samlall told Kaieteur News that notices had recently been served to the vendors informing them that they needed to remove their structures.
He had explained that, while notices had been sent out to persons with structures on government reserve land, not all of them had complied and removed their structures. Samlall added that Parika was on the verge of becoming a full-fledged township, and it was not acceptable to have such dismal conditions in a town.
“We want to develop and clear up Parika and make it a good place to live,” said the Chairman. “I want people living in Parika to do the right thing, so that we can together make Parika a nice place to live.”
