The main event may have passed, but Buxtonians were not prepared to be left out as they tramped through the village yesterday in their Mashramani celebrations.
They were joined by Opposition Leader Robert Corbin, who had his hands full when a group of young women clung on to him at the junction of the Railway Embankment and Friendship Road.
It was probably the largest turnout for the event which has been held for the past several years, and scores of revellers from Buxton and villages as far away as Ann’s Grove to the east and Beterverwagting to the west participated in the event.
This was despite the event occurring on the same day as the Berbice Mashramani celebrations which had attracted thousands in the past.
Beginning on the railway embankment, the procession wended its way through Church of God Road to the Main East Coast Highway, through Company Road and then back through Friendship Road, from where the procession headed to the Buxton Community Centre Ground.
There was no absence of costumes, with some revellers sporting elaborate headdresses and skimpy outfits to add to the festive atmosphere.
There were no incidents throughout and, although a part of the procession took place on the main road, there was a smooth flow of traffic despite the absence of the police, as marshals did an extremely good job.
