A wife was charged with the murder of her husband yesterday when she appeared before Acting Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
It was alleged that on February 20 last Lackraja Seetaram, of 224 De Willem, West Coast Demerara murdered her husband, Bissoondial Dhanpaul, 54. Seetaram was not required to plead since the charge was indictable.
The woman, after being read the charge, told the court that on the day in question she and her husband had a misunderstanding.
The woman said that the argument stemmed from her husband coming home drunk and picking up some money that the couple was saving.
Seetaram said that after the argument her husband fell on the ground and hit his head.
Bail was refused and she is expected to make her next court appearance on March 3. The matter was also transferred to the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
The Police had assumed that the man had died from acute Mycorcardial infarction (heart attack) as a result of hypertension.
The family had secured a death certificate from a doctor at the Leonora Cottage Hospital showing this.
In a twist of events the funeral service was halted after the family was preparing to cremate Dhanpaul.
According to reports, the police had received information on the morning of the funeral that the couple had an argument and had a fight. As such the police ordered that a post mortem be carried out on the man’s remains.
Following the post mortem which was conducted yesterday by Doctor Nehaul Singh, it was revealed that Dhanpaul died as a result of a fractured skull due to a blunt trauma to the head.
