The hit 2004 Bollywood movie ‘Phir Milenge’, which portrays a woman’s struggle against discrimination because of her HIV-positive status, is being adapted to stage by the relatively new Performing Arts Association of Guyana.
The movie, directed by South Indian actress, Revathi, received good reviews, although it did not fare well at the box office.
The members of the Association decided to the stage a play based on the movie in efforts to raise funds to continue a series of performing arts workshops it has been having across the country.
According to Nazia Persaud, who plays the role of Tamanna Sahni, a top performing staff member of an advertising firm fired because of her HIV status, said members of the Association benefitted from training during the Caribbean Festival of Arts last year.
As a result of that training, they have been training others in drama, dance and other art forms. Workshops have been held on the Essequibo islands of Leguan and Wakenaam, and in Georgetown and Berbice.
The Association was formed in September, and 28 of its members make up the cast of the stage adaptation of “Phir Milenge.”
The stage play is being put on under the name “We’ll meet again,” and features six dance items. The stage play is much the same as the movie, with no real differences in the script.
It tells the story of how the lead character, Tamamna, becomes infected with HIV through her college sweetheart after they met again at a reunion. She is dismissed from her job because of having HIV, though her boss would not admit it.
Tamanna decides to take the matter seriously and fight her dismissal in court.
The stage play opens at 19:00 h today at the National Cultural Centre.
Another performance is scheduled for tomorrow at 17:00 h, and then there will be a matinee show for students and teachers only on Monday at 14:00 h.
