For the second night in a row, Squash fans were treated to an exhilarating match involving Caribbean under-15 champion Mary Fung-A-Fat as play in the 2009 Toucan Industries Inc Mashramani Junior Tournament continued, at the Georgetown Club Courts.
This time her opponent was national player Nyron Joseph and even though he went into the contest as the underdog, he produced a fantastic performance to prevail against a determined Fung-A-Fat in five gruelling sets 9/3 1/9 9/7 8/10 9/7 to register his second win in as many matches.
Fung-A-Fat, who had lost to another promising player Kayla Jeffrey on opening night, started slowly, allowing Joseph to dominate the early rallies and run away with the first set.
However, in the second stanza, Fung-A-Fat was in full flow and stamped her authority, executing some exquisite shots to level the contest.
The third game saw an enthralling battle for the ascendancy as both players exhibited superb condition, running down everything return that came their way.
The rallies were intense keeping the fans extremely interested in the battle, before Joesph nosed ahead and managed to claim the lead by two sets to one.
Realising the importance of the fourth set to keep her chances alive, the Caribbean champ, who was the overwhelming favourite to win was never allowed to dominate as Joseph matched her in every department, but the calmness of Fung-A-Fat on crucial points proved the decisive factor as she held on to square the match and send it into a decider.
In a tactical battle, each player battled hard for the advantage, but no one was allowed to race to a decisive lead with Joseph scrambling to all corners of the court to retrieve some blistering forehand shots from a gritty Fung-A-Fat.
His tenacity made her work even harder to win points and in the end it took its toll as she uncharacteristically produced a number of unforced errors to hand the game and contest to Joseph, thereby producing the first big upset of the competition.
In the early matches, future stars of the game such as Alexander Cheeks and Taylor Fernandes overcame strong challenges from the likes of, talented newcomer Lydia Alphonso and Matthew Phang, while later in the evening, it was the ‘big’ boys turn, with Deje Dias and Nicholas Narain putting on an entertaining display in their close four-setter.
