An 18-year-old youth from Grove was yesterday remanded to prison after failing to disclose his residence to the presiding magistrate, Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates Court.
It was alleged that Arthur Thomas, on February 17 last, at America Street, without lawful authority had in his possession four £10 notes, knowing that the currency notes were forged.
A second charge states that the same day Thomas uttered these same forged notes to Viswahnaugth Doodnauth, knowing that they were forged. He pleaded not guilty to both charges. He was unrepresented in court.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith did not oppose bail but explained to the court that on the day in question the defendant went to America Street where Doodnauth works as a money changer.
Griffith further added that Thomas issued the notes to the Doodnauth who changed the money. The prosecutor said that after Doodnauth realized that the money was forged he started to shout for Thomas who turned back and snatched the money then proceeded to runaway.
Griffith said that Thomas was arrested by police ranks in the vicinity of America Street.
It was after this explanation that the magistrate requested from the defendant his address.
Thomas then told the magistrate that he lives in Grove, East Bank Demerara; however the magistrate then asked the defendant if he occupies the entire Grove Housing Scheme.
He answered Magistrate Robertson in the negative and said that he lives in “Tank Street Grove” but did not know the lot number.
When asked by the magistrate if he wished to go somewhere where an address is provided the lad answered in the affirmative.
He was then remanded to prison with the magistrate telling him that he would remain there until he gives the court a proper address.
The accused is expected to make his next court appearance on March 9.
