The Children’s Mash festivities culminated on Saturday with a massive road parade that saw schools in several regions across the country performing in a festive manner.
While a few costumes were dull and lacked the customary glitz, glitter and the kaleidoscope expected around ‘Mash’ time, others were brilliant, striking and radiated a festive air with their artistic colour array.
Children’s Mash Convenor, Mrs. Desiree Wyles-Ogle noted that the Children’s Mashramani Road Parade this year around was spectacular, emphasising that most of the schools did well in their presentation and costume designs.
She added that the parade was awesome and extended gratitude to the schools, regions and other entities that participated.
In the Nursery Band category, Sherman’s Nursery ‘Garden Beauties’ did not do too badly, and Turkeyen Nursery’s ‘Sweet Sweet Melda’ was truly amusing and colourful.
Kingston Nursery’s entry dubbed ‘Food, Food in Galore as we Grow More’ was impressive and in keeping with Guyana’s ‘Grow More Food’ theme.
Selman Fraser Nursery’s ‘Deforestation: depletion of the forest’ worked well in reminding Guyanese to care our forest resources.
‘Guyana a Paradise’ submitted by Happy Hearts Nursery showcased a happy bunch who were an impressive fusion of colour and great artistry.
The competition was intense in the individual presentations and saw Janel Brooms standing out as a dazzling and energetic contender with his ‘Red Legend’.
Kelaana Mc Cammon’s entry ‘Eat right and Live Healthy’ was a splendid one that deserved strong points. Melliann Welch with ‘After the Rain’ delivered another splendid entry, while Dolphin Secondary School’s ‘Save the Dolphin’ was magnificent, with the young man’s costume cradling and comforting a deflated plastic dolphin he pretended was injured.
The Primary Band category saw Winfer Gardens, St. Thomas More, Rama Krishna, Ketley and Tucville Primary Schools in colourful battle with their respective themes ‘Celebration of Colours’, ‘Youth of Guyana’, ‘One People, One Culture, One Design in 2009, and ‘The Prince of Sports’ showing female wind-ball cricketers and their cheerleaders and ‘Love and Unity in 2009.’
Entries in the Secondary Band Category included Richard Ishmael Secondary with ‘Let’s have a harmonious, peaceful time in 2009’, Tutorial Academy with ‘Beauty from the Deep’, and David Rose Community High School with ‘Golden Rays of Eldorado.’
Dolphin Secondary’s ‘Fire and Ice’ was a remarkable piece, as well as Ascension Community High’s ‘Sunshine Guyana.’ Freeburg Secondary was impressive with their ‘Unity’ theme and the same can be said of Cummings Lodge Secondary with ‘Educating our Nation against HIV Discrimination with one heart, one mind in 2009.’
David Rose’s School for the handicapped entry was dubbed ‘Environmental Friendly’ and offered much fun for spectators who were entertained with the antics of those in their costumes.
YWCA May Rodrigues Learning Centre was truly inspirational with ‘Education is the Key to Success’, and the same could have been said for the Rotaract Club of Georgetown Sophia Literacy Programme’s ‘Clean up in time in 2009.’
The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs Hinterland Scholarship Division entry ‘A New Hope for Agriculture in 2009’ was rated among the better costumes, while Z-BRA Children’s Network could have added a little more colour to their ‘In One Design We Are The Flowers In One Beautiful Garden’.
In the float parade category there was one impressive lone entry by Valroiden Carmichael titled ‘Snow White and the seven dwarfs celebrating Mash in One Design in 2009.’
In the regional presentation Region Four showcased ‘Vision for Guyana’s Happiness depends on happenings so let’s work together’. Region Six competed with a positive entry dubbed ‘Light of the Universe’.
Region Seven represented with ‘One Culture, Many Designs in 2009’, while Region Two entered their ‘Guyana our Paradise’.
In the Children’s Costume Parade Individual Category, the Guyana National Road Safety Council was a scene stealer with their entry ‘Be wise – Practise Road Safety and stay Alive’.
