As Trinidad and CARICOM prepare to host the Summit of the Americas in April, Guyana is among several other CARICOM countries that will be assisting with the security arrangements.
The summit which will be attended by President of the United States Barack Obama is slated for April.
According to Commissioner of Police Henry Greene, Guyana is expected to send some 30 police ranks and one officer to assist with the security arrangement for the events. He said some ranks from the Guyana Defence Force have already been sent to Trinidad to assist with advance security works.
In addition, Greene said the CARICOM Impact body is dealing with the overall security arrangements for the event. He said the commissioners and military chiefs have met in Jamaica to discuss the security arrangements.
The Guyana contingent of police ranks is expected to leave for Trinidad some time next month.
And, in wake of the recent alleged fraud involving Texas billionaire Allen Stanford, Commissioner Greene said that Guyana is capable of dealing with financial crimes.
According to Greene, his ranks have been over the years receiving local and overseas training to deal with such crimes, but currently the law is not structured to deal effectively in fighting financial crimes.
“Guyana has the capability to deal with financial crimes, mainly money laundering. However the law is now being amended to give us more leverage to deal with that,” Greene said.
