– Simmons (167) and Pollard (94) highlight second day’s play
By Rawle Welch
Opening batsman Christopher Barnwell (56) posted his highest first-class score as Guyana closed the second day’s play yesterday on 145-2 in reply to Trinidad and Tobago’s mammoth 530-8 declared, at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Playing in their seventh round WICB Regional four-day encounter, the hosts, aided by a 99 runs opening partnership between Barnwell and Assad Fudadin (40) made a strong reply to the Trinidadians total, but still needed a further 385 runs to take first innings points.
The batsmen at the crease are Leon Johnson on 19 and Narsingh Deonarine 15.
Leg-spinner Imran Khan, who got the nod from Captain Daren Ganga to come into the attack ahead of his more established counterpart Amit Jaggernauth did not disappoint as he grabbed both of the wickets to fall, conceding 30 runs off 11 overs.
Khan first accounted for the belligerent right-handed Barnwell, whose inclination to overdo the cut shot saw him completely miss a ball that was delivered fast and flat as it smashed into the middle stump.
It was a poor ending to an innings that promised so much and it contained 12 powerfully struck boundaries. He reached his half century with his favourite cut shot to the third man fence for his eleventh four off 63 balls in 84 minutes.
Johnson then joined Fudadin, but with the addition of just seven runs, the latter prodded forward at a delivery that pitched in line and Justin Guillen fielding at silly point held on to the catch to leave Guyana on 106-2.
Fudadin stroked four fours in his innings.
Earlier, the Trinidadians resumed the day on their overnight 279-3 with the in-form Lendl Simmons on 148 and Keiron Pollard on 33. The pair added a further 39 runs, before Simmons, who was responsible for 19 of those offered a simple return catch to spinner Devendra Bishoo with his personal tally on 167 and T&T 318-4.
His knock contained 19 fours and a solitary maximum off 260 balls in 373 minutes.
Sherwin Ganga entered the fray to partner Pollard, who had already benefited from a dropped catch off the first ball of the day when skipper Dowlin at short cover floored a straightforward chance off the off-spin of Steven Jacobs.
They batted sensibly, being circumspect to the good balls and dispatching the bad ones on a track that begun to play increasingly slower, making life extremely hard for the Guyanese bowlers as they toiled away with little success.
The introduction of pacer Trevon Garraway at the Players Pavilion end managed to check the free scoring and dangerous Pollard somewhat and when he had reached 94, the nippy Garraway got him to drag a delivery that was pitched wide back onto his stumps, causing much celebration among the local players.
Pollard’s knock was laced with 9 boundaries and 2 sixes from 155 balls as T&T reached 395-5.
Wicketkeeper Gibran Mohamed joined forces with S. Ganga, but the partnership yielded just 12 runs when S. Ganga, who had produced a peach of a straight drive that raced over the ropes off Garraway was deceived by a well-disguised slower ball the next delivery, failed to check the drive, instead offered a catch to substitute Gajanand Singh running to his right at cover.
He made 38 with 7 fours.
Samuel Badree was the new batsman to join Mohamed and the duo took T&T to 418-6 at the lunch interval with Mohamed on 8 and Badree 9.
After the break, the two batsmen entertained the sprinkling of fans with a exhibition of stroke-play, especially Badree, who raced to 44 off 50 deliveries with 5 fours, before he attempted one ‘big’ shot too many and Garraway held a well judged catch running in from deep long-off off Bishoo. The score was then 487-7.
Former West Indies player Ravi Rampaul came next and together with Mohamed increased the tempo as T&T looked to gather quick runs before the declaration.
Rampaul was quite severe on Bishoo, depositing him twice into the Western Stand for huge maximums, while Jacobs, and also came in for rough treatment.
The Trinidadian fast bowler was eventually dismissed caught by Singh (sub) off Deonarine’s bowling for 24, leaving Mohamed unbeaten on 53 with 2 fours and a six when D. Ganga called in Mohamed just 10 minutes shy of the official tea time.
Bishoo had 3-114 and Garraway also picked up 3 wickets for 116 runs.
Play resumes today from 10:00 hrs.
