The surgical operation for eight-year-old Amelia Etwaroo of 42 Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara, has been declared a matter of immense urgency, since the child’s life is very dependent on it.
As was reported in last Monday’s edition of this newspaper, the father of the Grove Primary School grade three student, Mahadeo Etwaroo, said that he is seeking financial assistance to have the child medically examined and operated on at a hospital in Trinidad.
He had revealed that, based on a CT Scan which was conducted at a private hospital, the child has what appears to be an object growing behind her brain, and that this is causing much distress to her physical demeanour.
According to Mahadeo, doctors claim that the foreign object could either be a tumour, an abscess or fluid accumulated at the back of her head. The situation has since caused the child to develop a constant headache and vomiting. The vision in her right eye has also become impaired. The child’s uncle, Lakeram Etwaroo, recently related that Amelia has since been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital and is receiving treatment to ease the symptoms caused by the presence of the object.
He noted, too, that the family is tasked with urgently acquiring the necessary funds for the child to be operated on at the Consolidated Medical Management Limited in Trinidad. He said that based on the hospital estimation the surgery will cost in excess of US$24,000 as opposed to the US$15,000 which was estimated previously by local doctors. An additional US$3,000 will be required for accommodation.
So far, the family has been able to secure about $1M through the efforts of family members and friends.
The Ministry of Health, according to Lakeram, is likely to provide a percentage of the remaining funds, which he fears may not be processed in time for the surgery to be done within the next week.
The family is now urgently seeking the assistance of members of the public to fund Amelia’s surgery before it is too late.
Persons desirous of assisting this cause can deposit monetary contributions to Scotia Bank Account 281-756 or call family members on 617-3460, 625-0406 or 644-0219.
