Police recovered cell phones, makeshift knives, marijuana, and even condoms in a dormitory that houses dangerous inmates during a pre-dawn raid yesterday at the Georgetown Prison.
The items were all recovered in the ‘Capital’ section of the prison, which houses prisoners who are incarcerated for offences ranging from armed robbery to murder.
Police said that the prohibited articles were hidden in mattresses and garbage disposal bins.
“We found three cell phones, 30 ‘jukas’ (knives), ‘weed’(ganja), razor blades, two battery chargers, five condoms and 49 Ziploc bags, which we believe were to be used for stashing the ‘weed’,” a police official told Kaieteur News.
The raid was conducted at around 05:00 hrs yesterday.
According to a police source, prison officials were kept in the dark about the raid, and only learned that the exercise was on when the police ranks turned up at the Camp Street prison.
The source said that Police intend to conduct several other surprise raids at the prison, in the wake of reports of drug smuggling and other illegal operations at the penitentiary.
In recent weeks, informants within the prison told Kaieteur News about a corrupt ring of prison officers who collude with inmates to smuggle marijuana, cell phones, money and other prohibited items into the prison.
The sources had identified several of the alleged perpetrators by name and rank.
They identified a prison orderly who was serving time for manslaughter as a central figure in the operation.
According to the reports, the orderly has access to virtually every section of the prison and acts as a go-between in the illegal transactions.
Kaieteur News was told that he was recently placed in solitary confinement after being found with a cell phone.
Director of Prisons Dale Erskine confirmed that he has received similar reports about this convict. He said that the inmate was warned and was even transferred at one time to another penitentiary.
