Defending champions Georgetown again proved that the standard of cricket in the City is much higher than the rural areas with a crushing 97-run win against West Demerara at the Canal Number Two Sports Club ground yesterday while East Coast defeated East Bank by 68 runs at Lusignan in the first round of the Nalico/Nafico Inter-Association 50-overs under-15 cricket competition.
In West Demerara, Georgetown made 134 off 42.3 overs on a good track and returned to shot out the hosts for 37 in 23 overs.
Christopher Surat hit five fours in 32 and Chanderpaul Hemraj made 27 with two fours and a six but Kumar Singh (12) was the only other batsman to reach double figures.
Left-arm spinner Kashaya Persaud took 2-5 and Trevon Bobb 2-12 for the visitors who then crashed to an emphatic defeat as only Bobb (14) offered token resistance, four batsmen made ducks and 10 batsmen failed to pass two including the four who failed to score.
Hemraj grabbed 4-7 while Kereem Naughton (2-7) and Surat (2-7) bowled Georgetown to victory.
On the East Coast, Brian Sattaur stroked four fours & smashed three sixes in an even half-century with support from Davendra Bisham (24), Chrisnauth Herilall (2-21) and Narine Dhanraj (2-12) as East Coast made 170 all out in 46.4 overs.
East Bank then fell for 102 in 33 overs, Nathram made 33 (3 fours & 2 sixes) and Herilall made 20.
The main wicket taker was pacer Travis Persaud with 4-28 from nine overs.
Leg-spinner Poorendra Jaigobin backed up with 3-9 from six overs and Owen Andrews 2-16 for East Coast who will play Georgetown today at Lusignan in their second game. East Bank take on West Demerara in today’s other second round encounter.
