Mohan Motilal, 39, a watchman of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on a charge of simple larceny and left after payi9gn a fine of $20,000.
On February 12, last, at 38, Industrial Site, he stole two bottles of 200ml of Ivanoff Vodka, property of DSL.
He pleaded not guilty.
According to Police Prosecutor, Denise Griffith, the defendant who works as a watchman, was first sent for a short period of time to work at the DSL store, located at Industrial site.
She added that at 13:30 hours on the day in question, the defendant was positioned to discharge the container. Some time afterwards as he was leaving the business premises, the security guard decided to check all bags of employees as is routine, and discovered that Motilal had in his possession the two bottles of Vodka.
When asked if he stole from the container, the accused said ‘no’ and told the court that he got the items from a box he was fetching at the time on duty.
“Your worship I didn’t know that anybody wanted the stuff, so I take it.”
He was eventually fined $20,000.
