A taxi operated under the GT Express service was found abandoned along the sideline dam of the rice fields in La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara, yesterday. Several rice farmers who were en route to tend to their rice fields at approximately 6:00 hours made the discovery.
According to the rice farmers, the car was found with the hood lifted and with the head lamps and tail lights missing. This newspaper understands that various other pieces of the vehicle, including the battery, were also removed.
According to manager of GT Express, Roger Eastman, the car was stolen from the driver’s house in Beterverwagting on the night of February 16. “When he (the driver) came out to clean the car before he started work, he found the car missing,” said Eastman.
The driver subsequently made a report to the Beterverwagting Police Station yesterday morning.
Eastman said that when he arrived at work at approximately 7:00 hours yesterday morning, he received a call telling him that one of the taxi service’s cars had been found in the La Jalousie rice fields.
Apart from the lights and the battery of the car, Eastman noted that the tape deck of the car had also been taken. “Some of the parts underneath the car have also been damaged, as well as the key switch,” said Eastman.
This may have been caused while bringing the car into the rice field.
The damage has been estimated at approximately $400,000. The car is presently impounded in the Leonora Police Station, where it will remain until the police have completed their investigations.
The car, a silver grey Toyota Carina AT 212, was initially thought to be a car which was hijacked by four bandits on Sunday night at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.
However, investigations showed that the missing cars were separate vehicles.
The police are still trying to locate the other car (HB 6003).
The bandits had stabbed the driver, Gordon Munroe, several times to his neck before hauling him from the driver’s seat and driving away with all his valuables.
After the attack, Munroe managed to contact a police friend who went to the scene and picked him up and took him to the Sparendaam Police Station.
He was subsequently sent to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was treated for several minor wounds to his neck and sent away.
Munroe said that he is hopeful that the police will recover the car soon before it is stripped and becomes unrecognizable.
