A huge palm tree planted on the reserve aback the North East La Penitence residential area crashed onto the roof of one of the houses, leaving thousands of dollars in damage in wake of the crash.
The impact also killed a parrot, and the owner, Rita Da Silva, is appealing to the Mayor and City Council to initiate immediate repairs.
Da Silva, who lives at 339 Harpy Drive, North East La Penitence, related that she was in bed at around 02:30 when she was awakened by a loud crashing sound. Upon investigation, she discovered that a huge palm tree from among several planted on the reserve aback her house had fallen upon her roof. The tree crashed through the zinc sheets and onto her wares cupboard.
There was also a gaping hole in the ceiling, while several pieces of cutlery lay smashed on the kitchen floor. The bathroom adjacent to the kitchen was also damaged.
Da Silva explained that her daughter had occupied that room and she could count herself lucky to have escaped unharmed.
Soon after the incident, Da Silva said, she called the M&CC, who in turn dispatched several officers to the scene. When Kaieteur News arrived on the scene, three men who identified themselves as those sent by the M&CC were taking statements from the occupants of the home. They directed all media queries to the Public Relations Department.
When contacted, Public Relations Officer Royston King said that he regretted the incident. He said that, soon after the mishap, Deputy Mayor Robert Williams visited the scene to assess the damage. Mr. Williams subsequently promised to launch an investigation into the matter.
King said that, at the moment, his men are in the process of ascertaining if the tree was indeed on the M&CC reserves. He said that he is awaiting a full investigation from the technical officers investigating the incident.
He said that he had spoken with City Engineer (ag) Lloyd Alleyne on the matter. Alleyne has since promised to have that angle ventilated.
In the meantime, Da Silva is worried that, with the gaping hole in the ceiling, she is left to the mercies of the elements as well as the bandits. She is appealing for urgent action.
