Blairmont, Rose Hall Canje, Kildonan and Scotsburg were all in winners’ row when action in the Gilgeous Pawn Shop 10th Anniversary twenty20 under-19 cricket competition bowled off on Wednesday in Berbice.
At Rose Hall Canje ground, the home team won the toss and took first strike against Young Warriors. They rattled up a healthy 180-2 with Naresh Gopaul blasting an unbeaten 56 off 26 balls with 2 sixes and 3 fours.
Videsh Singh backed up with 49 not out, an innings which was decorated with 5 sixes and 3 fours. Ryan Hussain chipped in with 35.
In reply Young Warriors were limited to 167- 8 when the overs ran out. Michael Fraser 66 (6 sixes & 2 fours) was all in vain. Linden Austin stroked 40 and national under-19 player Seon Hetmyer, 20.
Singh returned with the ball to cap a fine all round performance by grabbing 4-35 for Rose Hall Canje who won by 13 runs.
At Blairmont, the home team squeezed past West Berbice by two wickets in what was an exciting battle. West Berbice batting first mustered 100-7 with captain Asif Khan leading the way with 37 and Brendal Woolford 22. Off spinner Sohan Mohan took 4-3 bowling for Blairmont who in reply reached 101-8 with one ball to spare.
Mohan continued his fine all round effort by top scoring with 20 while Lackram Sukra scored 16. For West Berbice, Asif Khan and Keron Fraser took two wickets each.
At Bush Lot Farm, Kildonan crushed Big Star by 45 runs in a low scoring match after Big Star replaced Whim who were unable to field a team.
After taking first strike, Kildonan struggled to 75 all out off their allotted overs, Chunilall Mankarran was the top scorer with 24, Adriel Park made 17. Medium pacer Vishal Sooknandan 2-7 and fast bowler George Hughes 2-12 did most of the damage for Big Star who in their turn at the crease were dispatched for 30 off 15.3 overs.
Chunilall Maniram was the main wrecker with 3-7, Kevin Mendonca 2-1, Adriel Park 2-9 and Mankarran 2-13 all lending admirable support.
At Skeldon, Scotsburg defeated the home team by 67 runs. Scotsburg batting first, rattled up 141-9, national under-19 player Anthony Bramble led with 61 (2 sixes & 5 fours) and Alex Amsterdam 19. Damon Maynard and Ronald Brown took two wickets each for Skeldon who in reply were shot out for 74 in just 14 overs. National under-17 player Clinton Pestano led with 22 while off spinner Alex Amsterdam did most of the damage with the ball snaring 3-15, Mark Lionel backed up with 2-20.
The tournament continues today with Bermine opposing Police at Canje Ground and Chesney clashing with Rose Hall Town Pepsi at the Area ‘H’ ground. Second round matches will be contested on Wednesday.
The tournament is organised by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club.
