Skeleton in canal…
Police have detained a woman and three men in connection with the murder of rice farmer, Seeram Totaram, whose skeletal remains were fished out of a West Coast Berbice canal on Tuesday.
But the alleged mastermind is at present on remand for the alleged rape of a mentally ill woman. Police officials said that the other men, who are in their twenties, were arrested shortly after the gruesome discovery was made. The woman is said to be a close relative of the slain rice farmer.
One theory that detectives are working on is that Totaram’s murder stemmed from a dispute that the 33-year-old rice farmer had with a man who was accused of raping a female associate of Totaram’s.
The suspect was charged and remanded but was eventually freed. It is alleged that some time after his release, Totaram and the same man had an argument, during which the suspect threatened to kill the rice farmer.
Police officials say that this threat was never reported. After Totaram disappeared, police were informed about the threats to his life and arrested the four men. They were eventually released while the search continued.
During this time, the man who had allegedly made the threats was arrested and charged for allegedly raping a woman from a West Coast Berbice community.
Totaram’s skeletal remains, with head and limbs missing, were found on Tuesday when a fisherman snagged the corpse in his seine.
Relatives of the missing farmer were able to positively identify the remains from the underwear that was stuck to the skeleton.
According to the dead man’s niece, Raffia Khan, Totaram was last seen on the afternoon of December 21, last year, when he visited their home. According to Khan, Totaram had watched a movie on television and later went home.
She said that minutes later, he told his wife Latchmie Khemraj that he was going to round up some labourers to ‘throw paddy’ the following day. He was never seen alive again.
A post mortem examination is likely to be performed today.
