Thirty-four-year-old Charles Anthony Woolford, of 2041 Hummingbird Street, Festival City, North Ruimveldt, was yesterday charged with the capital offence of murder. Woolford had made his court appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson. It is alleged that Woolford on February 8, 2008 murdered his wife Latoya Woolford.
The self-employed construction worker was not required to plead since the charge was indictable.
He was remanded to prison and is expected to make his next court appearance on March 19. Latoya Woolford, of 2041 Hummingbird Street, Festival City, succumbed on Sunday morning at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after reportedly being stabbed several times about the body by her husband, Charles Woolford, who subsequently tried to end his life by ingesting what is believed to be a poisonous liquid, a few hours after learning that his wife had died.
He was hospitalized and was later released, on Tuesday last, to face the present charges.
Latoya Woolford was stabbed on Saturday afternoon at the couple’s home following what was described as a heated argument between the two. Latoya Woolford, 29, a mother of three, had her stomach sliced open shortly after her husband had allegedly accused her of having a relationship with a neighbour. The entire ordeal was witnessed by the deceased woman’s 11-year-old daughter, Marcia.
According to a relative who lives in the upper flat of the house, after receiving the stab wounds, Latoya Woolford staggered out of the apartment and managed to climb up a flight of stairs.
“She called out to my mother, and then she said that ‘Tony’ had stabbed her,” the relative recalled.
She disclosed that Woolford collapsed to the ground on two occasions, as her intestines began falling out.
By this time, her husband had proceeded to the gate and was threatening to harm anyone who came close to him.
The injured woman was rushed to the Davis Memorial but was later transferred to the GPHC because of the severity of her injuries.
According to relatives, a post mortem examination conducted on Monday revealed that the woman died from kidney failure due to multiple stab wounds.
The woman leaves to mourn her three children — Marcia Conway, 11, Macyann Woolford, 7, and Shemar Woolford, 4.
