Re-elected for his second term as President of the Guyana Amateur Power Lifting Federation after serving successfully as Treasurer, Peter Green, on Sunday last at the Annual General Meeting shared his five-year development plan with the membership.
He stated that it is a continuation from last year and will be in effect until 2012. A shrewd and no nonsense leader who loves to get the job done; Green has brought a new level of urgency to a small but dynamic entity.
It is during his first year (2008) at the helm that Guyana made a resounding return to the Caribbean Championships and created waves among their counterparts when our two most popular athletes ‘Big’ John Edwards and Mervin ‘Spongy’ Moses reminded all and sundry by their performances that we are still a country to be reckoned with.
The exploits of Edwards and Moses also brought back serious recognition by the International bodies to Guyana. Thus our successful selection to host the 4th Annual Caribbean Power Lifting and Bench Press Championships in April, 2010. The dates are to be confirmed.
Green says he and his new executive will continue where the last executive left off since their aim is to make the GAPLF a model for others to follow.
And to achieve this aim, he has documented the plans and programmes that will be implemented to accomplish their ambition.
· To re-establish relationships and membership with the North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF), the South American Powerlifting Federation (FESUPO) and the International Powerlifting Federation on a permanent basis and to achieve voting rights
· To examine and update the present constitution with a view to bringing it inline with the rules and regulations of the IPF and World Anti Doping Agency (WADA)
· To re-organise the National referees Corp with the aim of having its members registered and certified regionally and internationally
· To re-establish the medical committee to oversee the anti doping controls for in and out of season testing in accordance with the WADA Code and to lobby the Ministry of Sport to establish and anti doping commission in Guyana
· To update, educate and enforce international standards. Rules and technical regulations in respect of equipment, technique and otherwise during the hosting of the Novices, Intermediate, Masters, Juniors and Senior National Championships
· To identify, select and train athletes for international competitions
· To reactivate, re-organise and implement rules and regulations for the re-establishment of Sub Associations for the respective regions, 1 – 10.
· To energetically pursue a course of action entailing the familiarisation an promotion of Power lifting as a sport within the Schools and Community Centers throughout Guyana
· To form corporate partnerships with the private sector to assist with the general efficiency of the Federation
· To re-activate a website for the benefit of the public
· To replace the existing outdated powerlifting equipment
· To organise and host friendly international competitions with neighboring countries with the blessings of the NAPF, FESUPO and IPF
· To lobby for and work in tandem with the Ministry of Sport and the Ministry of Tourism towards the successful hosting of the 4th Annual Caribbean Championships (2010) and to do the same with regards to hosting the NAPF / FESUPO Championships by 2012.
· To ensure the standards of the Federation are elevated, recognised and acknowledged as ideal for the staging of the IPF World Championships.
To date the initiative of hosting the Caribbean Champions has been realised and shortly the Federation will be launching their own website.
Website designer Lance De Silva was present to give the members present a demonstration of what they can expect as well as some of the material that would be displayed for consumption.
