By Sean Devers
The new Guyana senior selection Committee has selected a 16-man squad from which the final thirteen will be selected for Guyana next match in the WICB regional four-day cricket tournament against Jamaica from Friday at Providence. The 16 players selected are asked to be at the Guyana National Stadium from 12:30hrs today for their first practice session since returning from Barbados yesterday.
Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul who slit the webbing on his bowling hand on the first day of Guyana’s last game against Barbados and was ruled out of the rest of the match which Guyana lost by an innings, has not been considered for selection due to his injury while Test player Sewnarine Chattergoon is also still not fit enough to play on Friday.
Royston Crandon who was forced to retire hurt before he had scored in the last game after being struck on his elbow by pacer Kemar Roach, has been included in the 16-man party while Gajanand Singh and Zaheer Mohamed, who both played in last year’s tournament have been added to the squad after being sidelined for the first four matches.
Guyana retuned home at the bottom of the points table with four points after losing a record four consecutive matches this season and will need to show a marked improvement if they are to remain in contention to claim their first title at this level since 2002.
The 16-man squad read: Travis Dowlin (captain), Shemroy Barrington, Assad Fudadin, Narsingh Deonarine, Leon Johnson, Royston Crandon, Hoomchan Pooran, Gajanand Singh, Steven Jacobs, Derwin Christian, Davendra Bishoo, Zaheer Mohamed, Christopher Barnwell, Esaun Crandon and Trevon Garraway.
