Precursor to eminent national league
By Franklin Wilson
President of the Berbice Football Association (BFA) O’Jeer in a recent interview with Kaieteur Sport revealed that his association in conjunction with Georgetown and Linden are pursuing the possibility of having exchange games at the club level.
This he says is to aid in the development of players in the associations while forging a higher level of camaraderie among the officials and players at every level.
“That apart, the idea is to create the atmosphere for teams and players who have never travelled to do so and gain necessary exposure.”
Talks he said are in the early stages but they are aiming that this initiative can get kicking early next month.
“Each Association will put up eight teams with four of these teams staying at home while the other four, from example from Berbice, two will travel to Georgetown and two to Linden and vice versa. So each association will be hosting four matches and we plan for the gates and everything to be split evenly amongst the associations.”
O’Jeer further disclosed that the three associations have already agreed to the initiative and they are fine tuning the agreement. A points system will be used to arrive at the winning association.
“It will happen with or with or without sponsorship.” The BFA head emphatically stated.
These matches are expected to take place over two days on one weekend in each area. Linden and Georgetown will play Friday and Sunday while Berbice will play Saturday and Sunday.
O’Jeer said he is positive that this programme will serve as a precursor to the inevitable national league. “It must come it cannot not happen.”
Using Berbice as an example, it was noted that every time a team travels to play outside the area and is defeated, the others feel that would have done better. So everyone now will get a chance to show what they can do, O’Jeer opined.
Assistance from GFF
The BFA boss disclosed that he is far from satisfied with the help they receive from parent body, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) but he was quick to point out that they do understand the financial restraints the governing body is under.
“It’s a learning curve that I believe they have been going through, everyone has had to suffer because of it.”
“I do understand that there is a lot of heavy criticism leveled at the GFF and the President Colin Klass but although I may agree with a lot of it I don’t think by shooting the leader it will rectify the problem. I do strongly believe that there are enough intelligent crafty individuals within the whole football fraternity and should the day come when they all pull together that’s the only time Guyanese football will reach the levels worth talking about.”
“And to be quite honest, I don’t see this happening in the near future.”
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
