There is need for proper teleconferencing facilities within the region to improve the communication systems, thus saving the time wasted on travel around the region for simple meetings.
This is according to President Bharrat Jagdeo, who, during a press conference on Thursday, told the media that regional leaders can engage each other in more productive discussions frequently with this technology. “This is not rocket science anymore. It is being done routinely in other parts of the world. We really need to improve our communication.”
Using himself as an example, the Head of State said that, should he have to travel to Jamaica for a meeting, it will take at least three days — one day to travel, another to return, and the third spent on a meeting that could last a few hours.
With teleconferencing facilities, he noted, this time can be used productively elsewhere. In December, the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company signed off a US$60M deal with the Surinamese telecommunications giant Telesur for the construction of a new submarine fibre optic-cable.
The 1200km (700-mile) cable will represent a potential 3000 to 4000 times increase in telecom bandwidth currently available through the Americas II Cable and satellite links.
The agreement has paved the way for the laying of a new cable which will link Guyana and Suriname to the worldwide network of similar cables through a landing station in Trinidad.
This will result in the huge increase in data and voice transmission capacity for both Guyana and Suriname by early 2010.
Responding to a question that there is a perception of disunity among Caribbean leaders, President Jagdeo said that such observation is not a real issue.
“I still believe strongly in the Caribbean mechanism; I still believe that there are committed leaders… I have spoken to a few of them in the past few days, and we all believe in the regional enterprise.” According to the Head of State, sometimes leaders are confronted with domestic problems, and because they may tend to be more inwardly focused on the issues in their own countries, they may appear to be neglectful of regional responsibilities.
“That does not mean that they are less committed to it, it just means that circumstances force them to focus more on the problems that are facing them at home, because people require answers.”
Whilst each leader has to answer to his population, the Head of State is warning regional leaders not to become ‘narrow,’ since in coordinated actions the region may have a better solution to some of the problems that are faced at the domestic level.
