President Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday said that he has asked Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, to remain in his post as Chairman of the Board of the National Insurance Scheme for a few more months.
The President had on Thursday confirmed that Dr. Luncheon had indicated his intention to resign the position a long time ago, citing a very busy schedule.
The Cabinet Secretary is also Secretary of the Defence Board.
However, President Jadgeo told reporters yesterday that a new NIS Board needs to be put in place, and as such he asked Dr. Luncheon to remain as Chairman until that time.
“…I was looking through the issue and I found that we still have to put in a new Board; there are some critical issues, so I didn’t accept his (Dr. Luncheon’s) resignation.
I asked him to stay on for maybe a couple of months more, until the new Board gets into place,” the President stated.
This newspaper understands that Dr Luncheon served as a consultant on Internal Medicine at the Ministry of Health in 1980, and as Senior Consultant in 1983.
In 1987, he became Head of the Internal Medicine Department.
In 1985, Dr. Luncheon became Associate Professor for the Medical Practitioners Programme at the University of Guyana. Dr. Luncheon studied at Howard University in Washington D.C., where he obtained his Medical Doctor’s Degree and became a specialist in Internal Medicine and Nephrology.
