Dear Editor,
After reading John Da Silva’s letter “Guyanese are fortunate to be led by President Jagdeo” in Kaieteur News of Tuesday 3/2/2009, I am compelled to let it be known I am among those Guyanese who disagree with Da Silva.
Da Silva says, President Jagdeo has “put forward worthwhile, innovative and creative ideas and suggestions to find solutions to global problems.” Guyana has not seen this innovation nor benefited from it.
Under President Jagdeo Guyana has seen death squads, the highest extra judicial killings and became a criminalized economy propped up by narco-dealers. Unemployment has reached its highest and more young people are unemployed or part of the criminalized economy.
The Great Flood in 2005 damaged homes, livestocks, animals, farmlands and sugar crops. People have not been compensated for their losses. Those who have used their hard earned savings to rebuild are again suffering losses caused by the 2008-2009 floods.
There are the milk, law books, dolphin, Charity wharf and conservancy dam scams, to name a few. President Jagdeo recently admitted the Office of the President cannot account for millions of dollars.
Under President Jagdeo the economy has consistently delivered negative growth. Sugar is collapsing. Guyana plans to import sugar from Guatemala. If the President possesses innovative ability GuySuCo should be thriving. Marginalisation, discrimination, recrimination and nepotism are the norm. There are more division and distrustfulness among the races than ever before. Allegations of domestic abuse plague the First Family.
The World Economic Forum, as expected, pays respects and compliments to every attendee and presenter. Customary compliments and diplomatic niceties are not acknowledgements of innovation and brilliance. World leaders at the Forum know Guyana’s economy is in tatters, corrupt and ranked among the poorest in the world.
They would be crazy to be impressed and take advice from the President.
Anybody can read a good speech. Reading a good speech and regurgitating prepared responses are not the same as being a thinker, intellect or governing brilliantly. Da Silva needs to take a look at the decay of this country and he would see how unfortunate Guyanese are under President Jagdeo.
