Caribbean Under-15 girls champion Mary Fung-A-Fat (+10) had to recover from a set down to defeat Brian Yong (+8) 12/15, 17/15, 17/16 as the Bounty Farm Handicap Squash Tournament opened Tuesday evening, at the Georgetown Courts.
It was Fung-A-Fat and Yong that had the crowd on the edge of their seats as the latter overpowered the former to take the first set. However, the diminutive young champion came back to tie the match and send it into a decider.
In the crucial final stanza, Yong came out hitting the ball with express pace to reach match ball at 14-13, before Fung-A-Fat tied it up at 14-14. He had his second chance to close out the match at 16-14, but once again holding true to her reputation Fung-A-Fat never gave up and clawed her way back to pull off the remarkable victory much to the delight of the crowd.
Kayla Jeffrey and Taylor Fernandes were also on winners row, beating Deje Dias and Ryan DaSilva respectively.
A number of junior and senior national players, including National Ladies champion Nicolette Fernandes and Regan Pollard, who are the most severely handicapped players with -35 points, are scheduled to compete against several novices and beginners in this tournament.
The action will continue every evening from 18:00 hrs with the finals scheduled for Saturday evening.
