“I am happy to hear that I have won the National Female Sports Personality Award for the 6th time,” leading Guyanese female football referee Dianne Ferreira James told Kaieteur Sport via email.
“This one is special from the rest as it was with my father’s brutal slaying and knowing he will not be here to share any of my awards with me for 2008 that I pledged to do everything this year in his memory.”
“I had an outstanding year in my refereeing career, attending all the Concacaf events finals and the prestigious Olympic Games in Beijing, China. All this was in addition to winning the Caribbean Referee of the Year 2008 in Guadeloupe.”
“After my accident which almost cost me my life and my father’s death all of which occurred within one month I have become stronger mentally. My right hand injury may never heal, but is getting better daily. It does not prevent me from doing anything,” she informed.
The international football official disclosed, “I will be home for summer and will be refereeing again on home soil. Guyana is on the football map as is evident with Nykasie Liverpool, who will be joining me in Portugal for the Algarve Cup and FIFA Seminar from February 25 – March 12 in Albufeira, Portugal.”
All her hard work has eventually paid off with her performance in Chile FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup 2008, and again being selected to officiate at the Algarve Cup in Portugal.
“I train 5 days per week and works hard on my fitness and game. My son Romario is into athletics, placing 2nd in the 5000m Open and 3rd in the 1500m at the School’s Track and Field Meet two weeks ago. He is now preparing for the BAISS Championships which will be held from March 4-6.”
“In school, he is preparing for the BJC Exams in May where he is writing 7 subjects (English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Health Science, Art and Religious Studies. These exams are a promotional exam to Grade 10 (4th Form) and you must pass 5 subjects, including Mathematics and English,” she informed.
“He also plays football every weekend for Cavalier U-16 team. He will return home to seek a place in Guyana U-15 team for the CFU Tournament in Trinidad in the summer.” “I would like to thank the GFF and all my refereeing friends for their support during 2008, especially Dion Inniss, Roy McArthur, Trevor, Nykasie, Lawrence ‘Sparrow’ Griffith, Venton Mars and Harry (Wayne Joseph) and most of all my family who’re always there for me,” she noted.
