Ulric ‘The Master’ Harris employed superb tactics to out-spell a star-studded field of scrabble players and carted off top honours when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) opened its season with the GASP Open championships at the Chamber of Commerce Building, Waterloo Street, South Cummingsburg, Sunday morning last.
Harris chalked up 5 games, the same amount as James Krakowsky, but won by dint of a larger positive spread of 715. Krakowsky amassed a positive spread of 573.
Abigail McDonald suffered a shock defeat to Ruby Cummings but still managed to finish in third position. Her eventual tally was 4 games and a positive spread of 252. Cummings amassed 4 games and a negative spread of 120 but received honourable mention for her efforts.
The day started well for Harris who enjoyed an impeccable morning session. Curtis Liverpool (37), Floyd Carmichael (223) and James Krakowsky (254) were his victims.
His only loss, in the post lunch period, came at the hands of McDonald, by a spread of 19. He subsequently rebounded against Colin Chichester (220).
Krakowsky started his day with 2 straight wins over Cummings (202) and McDonald (222) before suffering his only lost to ‘The Master’ (31). He recovered with victories over Floyd Carmichael (69) and Orlando Michael (2).
McDonald defeated Colin Chichester (119) in the first game before her lost to Krakowsky. She then rattled off three straight wins against Orlando Michael (223), Harris (19) and Carmichael (115).
At the start of the final game she, along with Harris and Krakowsky were engaged in a stiff battle for top honours. Ruby Cummings then burst her bubble.
President of the GASP, Moen Gafoor has not yet returned from an overseas engagement but in his absence his deputy Chichester disclosed that a full release of the Association’s itinerary would be soon released.
In the meantime players are reminded that practice sessions continue at the Malteenoes Cricket Club, Thomas lands on Thursdays starting at 07:00.
