Former murder accused Sean Hinds was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared in court charged with abduction of a13-year-old girl.
The 41-year-old Hinds allegedly abducted the 13- year-old girl from Freeman Street, East La Penitence, with intent to have her secretly confined, on January 27. He pleaded not guilty when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday.
He is being represented by defense counsel Vic Puran and Glenn Hanoman.
In making a bail application, Hanoman noted that bail should be considered, given the fact that the offense is a bailable one. He added that, despite the fact that the charge falls under the Kidnapping Act, in this case there was no ransom demand.
Hanoman told the court that his client is a prominent businessman who operates a bar called ‘Reflection’ in D’Urban Street, and as such poses no flight risk to the court.
He added that his client is also the father of three, and resides with his reputed wife on the same premises where his business place is located.
According to Hanoman, after being informed that his name was being called in connection with the matter, his client immediately made himself available to the police at the East La Penitence Police Station.
Hanoman further sought to clear the air in court about some prejudicial reports that were published in some sections of the media about his client.
“This matter came about after my client attempted to prevent a rape charge from being made against another.”
He further noted that his client had been in the lock-ups for almost five days. Hanoman further acknowledged that his client previously had matters before the courts, but all were acquitted; and in his previous matter, he never missed any of his trials.
However, bail was objected to by police prosecutor Denise Griffith. She said that while the offence is bailable, the prosecution is very much concerned about the likelihood of the accused interfering with the virtual complainant.
She pointed out to the court that, after abducting her, Hinds reportedly took the teen to Timehri, and then to the East Coast of Demerara. Griffith added that while on the East Coast of Demerara, “Some things took place” which would be told to the court at a later date.
Hanoman again sought to engage the court’s attention by contending that the prosecution is asking the court to look at his client as a guilty person, which is not fair. “I ask you, Your Worship, not to be prejudicial,” Hanoman begged of the court.
However, bail was refused, and Hinds is expected to make his next court appearance on Friday, February 6.
