Race Walkers are currently undergoing intense training in preparation for the first competition of the year, a 20-lap event around the inner circuit of the National Park. The race will get underway on Sunday February 15 and will herald in Guyana’s 39th Republic Anniversary.
A second event planned for one week later, on Sunday February 22, commences at the Burnham Bust Public Road Kitty proceed along Viissengen Road, up to the Place of the Seven Ponds, Botanical Gardens and is known as the Burnham Anniversary Race Walk.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Cavalier’s Sports and Tour Club, David Kirton, both events will feature the cream of the country’s race walkers from all ten administrative regions.
Additionally, a team is expected from Barbados to challenge the local stars in both events.
Local male and female stars, Rudolph Mitchell and Donna Ramkissoon will spearhead Guyana’s charge for top honors.
The races will be contested in several categories-seniors, juniors and veterans and trophies and other prizes will be at stake in each category. Interested participants are urged to be at the starting point at around 05:30 for registration and a prompt start. Step off time is 06:30 hrs, sharp.
