Leader of the Alliance For Change, Raphael Trotman, in light of the call for a probe into the contaminated fuel discovered at the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated’s Anna Regina facility, has said that President Jagdeo’s action shows his support for the AFC’s motion.
Trotman had tabled the motion in the National Assembly last year calling for investigations into the affairs at GPL, wherein recommendations would be proffered as to how business could be conducted more efficiently.
Trotman posited that had the Government supported the motion then, the issue of contaminated fuel making its way into key components responsible for power generation would not have happened, given that the appropriate checks and balances would have been identified. He noted that had the motion been approved at that time, the nation would have been saved hundreds of millions of dollars. Notwithstanding, the AFC leader said that he was hopeful that whatever recommendations emanated from the President’s investigations would be implemented.
President Bharrat Jagdeo on Monday announced that he has ordered a full investigation into the affairs at the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL) as it relates to the contaminated fuel that found its way into an Essequibo power plant, damaging key components at the facility. The President made the disclosure during a press briefing at the Office of the President, while responding to the fact that the contaminated fuel was only discovered after it had already damaged the equipment.
According to GPL, a total of 4,000 barrels of heavy fuel oil was dispatched, in two approximately equal shipments to the plant at Anna Regina and both shipments arrived at the plant contaminated with water and some foreign solid matter.
Samples were dispatched to Trinidad for testing to ascertain the extent and type of contamination.
The results have since arrived from Trinidad and according to Chief Executive Officer of GPL, Bharrat Dindyal, the results will have to be assessed and a report will be prepared.
