President of the University of Guyana Student’s Society, Jason Benjamin has returned unopposed to that position.
Benjamin was returned after nominations closed with no other aspirant contesting the position. The entire serving executive was also reinstated en bloc.
Speaking with Kaieteur News shortly after news of his reinstatement filtered out, Benjamin said that he was honoured to have been given a further opportunity to complete the task of making university life more comfortable for students.
He said that he would continue to work assiduously towards the realization of a sports facility on campus, a project he vows to have on stream for the University of Guyana’s 50th anniversary
in 2012. He also said that during the new dispensation, he aspires to heal the rift between some lecturers and students. Benjamin noted that this has been a burning issue, with some students openly showing disdain for their lecturers. He said that he realizes that such behaviour can usurp the systematic process on campus and therefore requires immediate attention to prevent things from getting out of hand.
This is Benjamin’s fourth tenure as president, having served in this capacity from 2004-06 and again in 2007.
During this time he has managed to broker a deal with an insurance company to have all students attending UG insured against injuries incurred while on campus. The arrangement also covers students traveling overseas on University business.
Reflecting on the input of the UGSS under his watch, Benjamin said that his group has negotiated with the postal authorities to have postal services available to students on campus. An outpost of the GPO is now located opposite the UGSS office on campus.
He said that the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company has also acquiesced to a request by the UGSS to install phones at strategic points on campus. “These initiatives may appear insignificant but the feedback that we have received seems to suggest that the majority of students are indeed happy with the work we have done so far,” Benjamin said.
Meanwhile, the installation ceremony for the new president of the UGSS is scheduled for Wednesday evening at the Education Lecture Theatre starting at 14:00hrs.
